AUSTRALIAN NAVY CADET UNITS, HISTORY, REPORTS & CURRENT EVENTS
(listings correct as at 7th March 2000)

The Australian Navy Cadets (previously known as Naval Reserve Cadets 1973 - 31 march 2001), came under the direct sponsorship of the Royal Australian Navy in January 1973, providing for the spiritual, social and educational welfare of boys and girls and help to develop them in character, a sense of patriotism, self-reliance, citizenship and discipline. Uniforms are supplied free of charge. Cadets are required to produce a certificate from their doctor to confirm they are capable of carrying out the normal duties and activities of the Cadet Corps. If injured while on duty, Cadets are considered for payment of compensation. Parades are normally held during a weekend, Saturday or Sunday, or on Friday evening.
Training Syllabus includes seamanship, boat handling - sail and power, navigation, physical training, rifle shooting, signalling, rope splicing, general sporting activities and a variety of other subjects. Instructional camps are arranged for Cadets and they are also given opportunities, whenever possible, to undertake training at sea in ships of the Royal Australian Navy.
If Cadets are interested in pursuing a maritime career, then they are given every assistance to join the Royal Australian Navy, Mercantile Marine or such other maritime career option they choose.

Unit History: TS BENDIGO was formed by the Navy League of Australia on 16 October 1952. Unit commenced under the guidance of Mr Des Nicholas, manager of the local radio station 3BO, through which he helped enormously with local recruiting, and Mr Jim Lundberg (later CO of the unit from 1962 to 1981). TS BENDIGO is considered to be the first inland cadet unit in Victoria. Approx one month after the unit was formed there were 90 boys parading as members. The Unit was officially commissioned on the 15th December 1956. The original home was an old boatshed on the shores of Lake Weeroona close to the centre of the City.
The Navy League invested funds in maintaining this building until the Unit was relocated to an old Nissen hut in the car park of the local Ordnance Factory (now ADI Ltd) in the mid 1970's. Earlier it had been decided that Lake Weeroona was too shallow for safe sailing and the Parent Committee commenced the process of renting a campsite at Lake Eppalock.
In 1969 the Parent Committee purchased an old Army building from the Bendigo High School for $10- and had it moved to the campsite some 30 kms from Bendigo. Parades were still held weekly at the ADI site in buildings, which were upgraded in 1990, and weekend camps were held at NLTS Eppalock.
In 2002 TS BENDIGO moved to the new Multi User Depot in Junortoun where they still parade on a Friday evening. The current Unit Support Committee continue to raise funds to pay for the lease and maintenance of buildings at the Lake Eppalock site. Selected as the Most Efficient Unit in Victoria in 1972 and 2003 and won the Navy League Shield for the Most Efficient Unit in Australia in 2003.

Unit formed by Navy League of Australia - June 1951. On 16 October 1952 they occupied the purpose built Sea Cadet training building on the shores of Albert Park Lake.
It was erected with funds from a public appeal in the 1950s as a memorial to the RAN. Later they removed to an old Military drill hall complex in Camberwell Grove, Camberwell.
In early 1988 the cadets were temporarily relocated to HMAS Lonsdale in Rouse St., Port Melbourne (now demolished) for parades until a new purpose built building in Surrey Hills was completed in October 1988.
The Albert Park building remained largely unused by cadets and was finally demolished when the race track was built around Albert Park Lake in the 1990s thereby losing a prime sail training site in Melbourne for sea cadets.
