CENTENARY OF NAVY LEAGUE IN AUSTRALIA - 2000

LAUNCESTON - TASMANIA
November 2000

The Navy League in Australia and later the Navy League Sea Cadets started in Tasmania in 1900 and spread to all States from that time. In addition to the watchdog actions of the League to try to protect Australia's maritime environment and its NAvy the other work centred on establishing youth training as Sea Cadets to encourage Australia's youth in their interests in the sea.

Now, nearly 100 years on, the Navy League's Sea Cadets now operate under the direct sponsorship and management of the Royal Australian Navy as the Naval Reserve Cadets. The Navy League Branches and Divisions continue to take a positive interest in the Naval Reserve Cadet training.

The Federal Council of the Navy League in November 1997 approved the Tasmania Division's proposal to celebrate the year 2000 centenary in Launceston with a number of events including the holding of the annual meeting of Federal Council in that location.

The Tasmania Division is coordinating with the State Government and other Government bodies to plan for this event. Federal Council is supporting them in this planning. Click here for Federal Council comment.
