WHAT
IT MEANS TO BE THE MOST EFFICIENT UNIT IN AUSTRALIA
"Unity, Harmony, Strength" these three words are the motto carved
into the TS TYALGUM crest. These words have hovered above every
Cadet who has ever passed through our doors for decades, and one
must stop to reflect what the words symbolise.
To our Cadets, it portrays more
than just a philosophy, more than a guideline. It explains the
feeling of pride that reverberates throughout the entire Ship's
Company. We appreciate that we belong to the most efficient unit
in Australia and that our name is engraved on the most coveted
trophy of the Australian Navy Cadets - The Navy League Shield.
But more importantly, it is that we belong; we have unity. We
are a group of very different people who have come together under
a shared interest that is the Australian Navy Cadets. We are a
group of people who are united by a shared pride; we have harmony.
Each Cadet realises they have played a key part in this milestone
achievement. They have all been instrumental in winning the Navy
League Shield for being the most efficient Unit in Australia for
2002. To someone on the outside it may be a piece of glorified
wood, but to the Cadets it is a symbol of recognition for all
the effort that we have put in together which could have, as easily,
gone unnoticed; we have strength.
The pride that has been generated from winning the Shield in 2002
will flow on to generations of Cadets that follow in our wake;
we did it together, as a team, and it has strengthened our resolve
to achieve even greater goals in the future.

AUSTRALIAN
NAVY CADETS- 'SERIOUS FUN - JUST ADD WATER'
The Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) has a history that stretches
back as far as the Navy in Australia. The Corps is modelled on
the United Kingdom's Sea Cadet Corps (UK SCC), which is recognlsed
as the oldest organised youth organisation in the Western world.
The UK SCC is a founding member of the International Sea Cadets
Association (ISCA), of which Australia and 20 other countries
also belong. The ANC currently have 93 units located around the
country, with the next new unit (in Ipswlch, QLD) about to be
accepted, there are approximately 2,700 cadets and 400 staff on
the books.
The Navy League of Australia established the Australian Sea Cadet
Corps early last century and, until 30 years ago, operated with
limited support from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). This shared
responsibility arrangement with an external organisation was unique
to the RAN, whereas Army and Air Cadets were closely integrated
with their parent Services.
The RAN assumed full control on 01 January 1913, renaming the
ASCC 'Naval Reserve Cadets' (NRC). By 1999 it was recognised that
the NRC was in serious decline and Navy implemented a review of
the NRC (Project 2020). This identified that the NRC lacked direction,
was ineffective II and becoming increasingly irrelevant to '1
both Navy and its Cadets.
Navy commenced reform by introducing a national NRC organisation
in late 1999, (previously the NRC had been administered on a regional
basis). At this time the Government also commissioned a review
of all Defence Cadets, 'Cadets: the Future', and this overtook
Project 2020. The Government's review saw the renaming of the
NRC as the "Australian Navy Cadets" (ANC), and the establishment
of the Australian Defence Force Cadets and a Directorate of Defence
Force Cadets (DDFC) to support a Government funded Cadet Enhancement
Program.
Set amongst this backdrop, the ANC has undergone extensive changes
in the last few years, on its quest to become the leading, and
preferred, youth organisation in this country. Organisational
restructuring has occurred, creating a National Headquarters and
National Commander (Captain Gavin Reeves ANC). The interrelationship
between Navy and the ANC was recently reaffirmed when a review
of responsibility (the Permanent Navy/ Australian Navy Cadet Interface
- PN/ANCI) was presented to the Chief of Navy Senior Advisory
Committee. Ultimately, the PN/ANCI review report seeks to obtain
a change in the personnel support that is provided by Navy to
the ANC. Recommendations are being progressed by the Director,
Australian Navy Cadets (Commander Derek Abraham-James, RAN).

AUSTRALIAN
NAVY CADET UNITS, HISTORY, REPORTS & CURRENT EVENTS
The
Australian Navy Cadets (previously known as Naval Reserve Cadets
1973 - 31 March 2001), came under the direct sponsorship of the
Royal Australian Navy in January 1973, providing for the spiritual,
social and educational welfare of boys and girls and help to develop
them in character, a sense of patriotism, self-reliance, citizenship
and discipline. Uniforms are supplied free of charge. Cadets are
required to produce a certificate from their doctor to confirm
they are capable of carrying out the normal duties and activities
of the Cadet Corps. If injured while on duty, Cadets are considered
for payment of compensation. Parades are normally held during
a weekend, Saturday or Sunday, or on Friday evening. Training
Syllabus includes seamanship, boat handling - sail and power,
navigation, physical training, rifle shooting, signalling, rope
splicing, general sporting activities and a variety of other subjects.
Instructional camps are arranged for Cadets and they are also
given opportunities, whenever possible, to undertake training
at sea in ships of the Royal Australian Navy. If Cadets are interested
in pursuing a maritime career, then they are given every assistance
to join the Royal Australian Navy, Mercantile Marine or such other
maritime career option they choose.
